Our Story

We didn't set out to start a camper business. We were just trying to find the right camper for us.

We’re a couple from Sydney who love travelling, camping and exploring this incredible country. We’ve been doing it for decades, and along the way we’ve tried just about every way of camping you can imagine.

Our first was a Kombi. We loved it. It was cute, full of character and gave us some wonderful adventures.

It also constantly broke down.

Then came the Jaycos. They were great and gave us plenty of fantastic family holidays, but as the years went by, we found ourselves wanting something simpler. Setting up camp took so much time, packing everything away took even longer, and sometimes we just wanted to arrive somewhere beautiful and start enjoying it.

We did the tent thing too. Great in theory... until you're setting one up after a long drive, getting rained in, packing it away wet, and having to open up it back home to dry it out.

Then we moved to a rooftop tent, and for a while we thought we'd found the answer.

Until those stairs started looking a little less appealing!

As we got older, climbing up and down — particularly for those middle-of-the-night bathroom trips — wasn't quite the adventure we were looking for anymore.

We knew what we wanted.

By then, years of camping had taught us something.

We didn't need more stuff. We needed the right stuff.

We wanted a really comfortable bed off the ground.

We wanted to arrive at camp without spending hours setting everything up.

We wanted an awning we could simply roll out, pull up a chair and relax under.

We wanted a proper little outdoor kitchen where we could cook a decent camp meal — because eating well is one of our favourite parts of camping.

We wanted solar, power, water and a fridge so we could get away from it all without giving up the basics.

And we wanted enough storage to take the things that make an adventure ours — including our son's swag when he could join us for the trip.

Most of all, we wanted something small, simple and comfortable that we could , park in our single garage, hitch up and just GO.

Then came the problem...

We started looking.

And looking.

There were some beautiful campers out there, but we couldn't justify spending $55,000 or more to get what we wanted.

Then we found a little teardrop camper that made us stop and think:

This could work.

So we bought one.

Then we started playing with it.

We changed things. Added things. Removed things. Thought about what we'd actually use and what we wouldn't. We worked on the layout, the kitchen, storage, power and the little details we'd learned mattered after decades of camping.

Eventually, we had it.

The camper we'd been looking for all along.

Simple to tow.
Simple to set up.
Comfortable to sleep in.
A proper kitchen.
Room for our gear.
Everything we needed — without a heap of things we didn't.

And we loved it.

Then something unexpected happened.

Our friends and family loved it too.

People would see it and ask questions. They'd climb inside, look through the kitchen and say:

“Where did you get this?”

Then came:

“Can you get me one?”

Enough people said it that eventually we looked at each other and thought...

Maybe we should.

And that's how our little family business, StepOut Campers, began.

We haven't designed these campers around a boardroom table or a marketing survey.

We've designed them around years of actually camping — the things we've loved, the things that drove us crazy, and all the lessons we've learned along the way.

Our philosophy is pretty simple:

Everything you need. Nothing you don't.

We want StepOut to make getting away easier.

Whether that's two nights by the beach, a few weeks exploring NSW, heading inland, following the coast or setting off on the big lap around Australia.

Less packing.

Less setting up.

Less stuff.

And a whole lot more time sitting under the awning, cooking something delicious, exploring somewhere new and wondering where you'll StepOut to tomorrow.

We love ours.
